The Serbian Orthodox Church of the Ascension of Our Lord is one of Subotica’s key sacred landmarks, boasting a rich heritage that dates back to the first half of the 18th century. According to historical records, a modest wooden chapel topped with a shingle roof originally stood on this site before the current church was built.
The permanent stone structure was erected between 1723 and 1726, funded through the generosity of Nikola Dželebdžija, a prominent local merchant and livestock trader. An inscription on the original iconostasis commemorates 1726 as the year of its completion.
A major renovation took place in 1766, which included the painting of a new iconostasis—later relocated to the smaller Church of St. Demetrius in the Aleksandrovo neighborhood. The building underwent several restorations over the centuries, with the most significant occurring in 1909–1910, which subtly altered some of its original Baroque features.
Today, the church stands as a captivating example of sacred architecture that gracefully blends stylistic influences—ranging from classic Baroque to subtle Art Nouveau details typical of early 20th-century Subotica. It remains a essential stop for visitors exploring the city’s spiritual and cultural history.
