The Monument to Dezső Kosztolányi in Subotica is dedicated to one of the most prominent Hungarian literary figures of the 20th century and one of the most important cultural icons born in the city. Dezső Kosztolányi (1885–1936) was born in Subotica, where he attended grammar school, before continuing his studies in Budapest and going on to build an exceptional, internationally recognized literary career.
His body of work spans various literary genres, alongside his notable contributions to journalism, translation, and non-fiction publishing. Kosztolányi’s works have been translated into almost every European language, establishing him among the most celebrated authors of his era.
The monument was crafted by the academic sculptor and Subotica native, Tibor Sarapka. The life-sized sculpture of Kosztolányi stands on a plateau framed by a colonnade of six pillars, creating a distinct memorial setting.
Titled “The High Schooler” (“Gimnazijalac”), the monument symbolically captures the youthful spirit, inner strength, and sense of rebellion that defined Kosztolányi’s creative voice. It is situated right in front of the historic grammar school where he studied and where his father served as headmaster.
Erected in 2014, the monument stands near a bust of Kosztolányi created by sculptor Gábor Almási, which was originally unveiled in 1985.
