The Lajos Vermeš Monument at Palić lake honors one of the most prominent figures in the sports history of Subotica and the wider region. Lajos Vermeš (1860–1945) is celebrated as a true pioneer of organized athletics and physical culture in this part of Europe.
Following his studies in Budapest, Vermeš dedicated his life to promoting sports, founding gymnastics and athletic clubs alongside his brothers. On his estate at Palić lake, he established the famed Palić Sports Games. The inaugural competition took place on August 26, 1880—predating the revival of the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896.
Vermeš introduced a remarkably diverse range of disciplines to his sports programs, including wrestling, long jump, shot put, gymnastics, swimming, boxing, fencing, and cycling. These dynamic events drew athletes and spectators from across the continent, flourishing right up until the outbreak of the First World War.
Today, the monument at Lake Palić stands as a tribute to his visionary legacy, celebrating Vermeš as a true forerunner of the modern Olympic movement.
